HAEMATOLOGY
The Haematology Department at SYNLAB Ghana performs and interprets a wide range of tests relating to the cellular components of blood. Tests performed in this unit are those for the diagnosis of blood disorders such as anaemia, abnormal coagulation, blood malignancies such as leukaemia, myelomas etc. We use automated analysers and experienced biomedical scientists for these tests. Our highly skilled staff add value to our tests by also performing microscopy of the blood samples. In addition, they screen for blood borne parasites such as Malaria and Filaria. Our highly experienced consultant Haematologist offers expert interpretation by reviewing their test results in collaboration with the treating physician. The department is also responsible for performing Total CD4/CD8 analysis, Haemoglobin Electrophoresis and Blood Grouping.
CHEMISTRY
The chemistry department processes specimens on a Beckman AU 480 automated analyser which allows the monitoring of the level of chemical components in blood, urine and other body fluids such as CSF. Clinical chemistry allows the assessment of the functions of different organs such as the kidney, liver, heart and pancreas. It provides a comprehensive metabolic profile of the patient at a point in time of Electrolytes, Urea, Creatinine, Blood Glucose, Liver Function Tests etc.
SEROLOGY AND IMMUNOLOGY
Immunoassays use state of the art advanced automated technologies to detect and quantify a specific macromolecule of interest in solution-(analyte) by using an antibody reagent that binds to it specifically and selectively in an immunological reaction. This technique is used in a wide variety of applications. These include: hormones, tumor markers, cardiac markers, infectious diseases such as Hepatitis B, specific proteins such as ASOT or CRP, therapeutic drugs such as digoxin or phenytoin.Serology means the detection of antibody to a particular antigen. Examples are Widal, RPR, TPHA, Chlamydia. Immunology looks at auto immune diseases such as rheumatoid arthritis and its follow up. Our well trained and highly skilled biomedical scientist perform and interpret these test results for our satisfied clients.
ANDROLOGY
Andrology, this encompasses:
· Routine Semen Analysis - made up of macroscopic, microscopic, sperm count, sperm motility, sperm vitality and Morphology tests. The latter is reviewed by a Consultant Haematologist.
· Leucocyte Estrase test - for the presence of white blood cells in semen.
· MAR (mixed agglutination reaction) test- for antisperm antibodies, can be requested.
HISTOLOGY & CYTOLOGY
· We refer core biopsies, surgical specimens for histological examination to highly specialized Consultant Pathologists. We also refer all types of biological fluids, fine needle aspirates and Pap tests for cytology.
· These Pathologists use a broad range of specialized techniques in addition to the routine descriptive morphological examination. The techniques consist of special stains, enzymatic histochemistry and immunohistochemical stains that detect the expression of several antigens on the tissue for example ER, PR and HER-2 and others.
· These aid in the diagnosis of the disease but also provide prognostic and therapeutic indicators.
MOLECULAR PATHOLOGY
This is the future of laboratory medicine which will impact on the practice of Clinical Medicine in the future. Genetic material DNA, RNA is analyzed to identify the presence of an infectious agent e.g., Hepatitis B or C, HIV, HPV, TB or tumours such as leukemia, lymphoma myeloma. We are proud to be pioneers in this field in Ghana. SYNLAB operates a central laboratory in Accra and regional laboratories in Kumasi and Takoradi. We pride ourselves on customer service. Our network of branches provides courteous, comfortable, and convenient patient care.
MICROBIOLOGY & PARASITOLOGY
The Microbiology and Parasitology department offers a comprehensive range of tests. Our department is highly regarded. The activity of the Laboratory can be broadly divided into four categories.
Microscopy for the detection of bacterial, fungal elements, parasites and a variety of cells associated with diseases. Different staining techniques are available depending on the application.
Culture of bacterial or fungi on a variety of media and subsequent identification of these organisms.
Performance of susceptibility testing according to CLSI (Clinical Laboratory Standards Institute) criteria.
Mycobacterium microscopy, Culture and Sensitivities are done at the reference laboratory.

Ultrasound Scan
An ultrasound scan uses high-frequency sound waves to create images of the inside of the body. Ultrasound scans are safe because they use sound waves or echoes to make an image, instead of radiation.
Ultrasound scans are used to evaluate the organs of the body found in the abdomen and pelvis, such as the liver, kidneys, pancreas, uterus, and prostate, and bowels. Ultrasound scans can also be used to monitor the development of a baby and carry out other specialised scans of the blood vessels and the musculoskeletal system.
A small handheld probe is placed on your skin and moved over the part of your body being examined. A lubricating gel is put on your skin to allow the probe to move smoothly.
This procedure is carried out by our experienced Radiologist and Sonographer.
Your results are ready for pick-up within an hour.
Book an appointment with us.
CT Scan
A Computed Tomography (CT) scan assembles a series of X-ray images, or slices, to create a more detailed view of the inside of the body. Our state-of-the-art CT scanners allow our team to perform multiple, advanced-imaging procedures such as CT angiography, which helps in diagnosing cardiovascular conditions like pulmonary embolisms (blood clots).
With patient care being our number one priority and using the wide range of 3D image reconstructions on top of multi planar images and many more, we produce outstanding radiographs. The radiographer will explain the full procedure and will ask you if you are happy for the scan to continue. This is called giving the verbal consent.
Early morning appointments and priorities will be given to diabetic patients.
The results will be ready to return to the referring doctor same day after examinations in most cases, with an average TAT of 3 hours, otherwise late examinations will be ready by 9am the next morning. The results pack will include the films of the study and a CD-ROM with viewing software.
X-Rays
X-ray have high specificity in detection of pathologies of the skeletal system as well as some disease processes in certain soft tissues, and “objects”- usually foreign body.
We offer digital x-ray images with high diagnostic quality ensuring we give our patients excellent results. Our highly professional staff are well trained to perform and recommend the right procedure tailored to the patient’s referring pathology and needs.
Routine x-rays are performed to:
- Diagnose or rule out pathologies
- Evaluate fractures and localize foreign bodies
- Medical exams
- Bone age assessment
A doctors’s referral is necessary for x-rays and we have a turnaround time of about 1 hour for reporting. No special preparation is required for x-ray procedures.
Electrocardiogram
An electrocardiogram (ECG) is a simple test that can be used to check your heart's rhythm and electrical activity. An ECG may be requested by any doctor who thinks you might have a problem with your heart.
Sensors attached to the arms, legs and chest area are used to detect the electrical signals produced by your heart each time it beats. These signals are recorded by a machine and are looked at by a qualified doctor to diagnose any potential problems with your heart function.
ECG testing services can be accessed at our Roman Ridge, Korle Bu and Tema offices and reports are available within 24 hours from our consultant Cardiologist.
ECG testing is completely safe and pain-free.

Spirometry
Here at SYNLAB we offer readily available spirometry services with results ready within 24 hours.
Spirometry is a simple test used to help diagnose and monitor certain lung conditions by measuring how much air you can breathe out in one forced breath.
We do this using a device called a spirometer, which is a portable machine you breathe into.
Spirometry may be performed by our trained nurses, who will guide you through the process.
Your results will need to be reported by our Physician specialist and made available to you within 24 hours.
Spirometry is a straightforward test and is considered very safe.

Saline Infusion Sonohysterogram (SIS)
SYNLAB offers this specialised procedure to support gynaecological care.
SIS is a safe and painless procedure that uses sound waves and fluid infusion into the womb to generate images of a woman’s womb and cavity. It helps in diagnosis of female fertility and health issues such as unexplained vaginal bleeding, fibroids and endometrial cancer.
This procedure is carried out by our experienced Radiologist and Sonographer.
Your results are ready for pick-up within an hour.

Echocardiography
SYNLAB is a leading provider of Echocardiogram services for many years. We offer private Echocardiogram scans with reports written by our Consultant Cardiologist and made available the same day.
An Echocardiogram, also known as an ‘ECHO’, is a specialised cardiac ultrasound scan used to assess the structure and function of the heart. It can produce images of your heart chambers as well as your heart's blood vessels.
The echocardiogram uses sound waves to create a picture produced by an ultrasound to check for possible damage for conditions that affect heart function.
The test determines whether your heart and valves are functioning and can be used to diagnose heart problems.

Why do some people find it more difficult to control their weight?
Why doesn’t everyone respond the same way to the same diet?
There are several factors that affect a person’s weight. Of these factors, genetics plays a significant role as it may make some people predisposed to gaining or losing weight in addition to conditioning other influential factors such as diet, physical activity, metabolism, emotional and mental factors, sleep, etc.
The study of genetic and biochemical markers has led to major progress in obtaining specific information on how these factors may influence a person’s capacity to manage their weight. Unlike restrictive diets or other more aggressive methods, it makes it possible to implement more targeted, effective, and healthier measures.
Based on the results of your genetic and biochemical panel, the WEIGHT MANAGEMENT TEST will allow you to:
- Identify the factors or areas that may have a greater impact on your body weight and metabolic health, and which require special attention or care as well as those you must control due to your genetics.
- Implement dietetic and healthy lifestyle measures which, maintained over time, will help you correct or prevent possible imbalances, enhance your quality of life, and foster more guided and effective weight management.
Is this test right for me?
The WEIGHT MANAGEMENT TEST is specially recommended for people:
- Whose goal is to watch their weight and who want to understand, in accordance with their genetic and biochemical panel, which factors may have a greater impact on being able to reach their ideal weight as well as the measures to do so.
- Who wish to adapt their diet and lifestyle to their genetic predisposition and current biochemical state and, with that, prevent metabolic complications and improve their wellbeing.
- This test is not aimed at people who wish to increase their weight

WhatsAppStress and Depression
Depression and burnout are complex mental conditions that are often invisible or difficult to identify. Approximately 280 million people in the world have depression, and with the modern pressures of work and life, 77% of employees have experienced burnout. These aren’t just numbers - they are friends, family, colleagues, and neighbours. They are us. These conditions often hide behind cheerful smiles, a great work ethic, or a strong personality.
What is depression?
Depression (major depressive disorder) is a common and serious medical illness that negatively affects how you feel, the way you think and how you act. Fortunately, it is also treatable. Depression causes feelings of sadness and/or a loss of interest in activities you once enjoyed. It can lead to a variety of emotional and physical problems and can decrease your ability to function at work and at home. Depression comes in many forms - Major Depressive Disorder, Seasonal Affective Disorder, Postpartum Depression, Persistent Depressive Disorder, Atypical Depression, and more.
What is burnout?
Burnout is a state of emotional, physical, and mental exhaustion caused by excessive and prolonged stress. It occurs when you feel overwhelmed, emotionally drained, and unable to meet constant demands. Burnout reduces productivity and saps your energy, leaving you feeling increasingly helpless, hopeless, cynical, and resentful.
Identifying the signs and symptoms of depression and burnout
The signs of depression and burnout can be subtle. This can make it difficult to recognise them, especially in ourselves.
If you’re experiencing any of the following, it’s important to talk to your doctor:
- Persistent sadness or hopelessness
- Loss of interest or pleasure in activities you used to enjoy
- Changes in appetite or weight
- Difficulty sleeping or sleeping too much
- Fatigue or loss of energy
- Difficulty concentrating or making decisions
- Thoughts of death or suicide
- Changes in behaviour, such as withdrawal from social activities or increased irritability
Why you should get tested
If you’re concerned that you or someone you know may be struggling with depression or burnout, it’s important to get tested. Testing can help to confirm the diagnosis and rule out other possible conditions. It can also help to identify the underlying causes of the condition, which can be important for treatment. SYNLAB offers a variety of testing and diagnosis services for depression and burnout. Don’t wait any longer. Book your test today.

Newborn screening is a simple test that is conducted shortly after birth to identify congenital or genetic disorders in Newborn babies that could result in major disabilities if not managed early and appropriately. Metabolic birth defects can cause physical problems, mental retardation and, in some cases, death. It is best for the baby and the family if these conditions are detected and treated early. SYNLAB offers an expanded metabolic screening and can confirm or exclude disorders of the newborn infants (32 disorders) and in elder children (27 disorders).
The development of a new screening technique known as tandem mass spectrometry (often abbreviated as MS/MS) can detect the blood components that are elevated in certain disorders, and is capable of screening for inherited metabolic disorders with a single test such as sickle cell anaemia, G6PD, cystic fibrosis, hypothyroidism, biotinidase deficiency, galactosaemia, adreno genital syndrome (AGS), phenylketonuria (PKU), maple syrup urine disease (MSUD), homocystinuria, tyrosinaemia type I, MCAD deficiency, propionic acidaemia, glutaric aciduria type I, isovalerianic acidaemia and methylmalonic acidaemia and other 15 more rare disorders. Furthermore, the used method also detects aberrant amino acid concentrations (including Tyrosinemia Type I).
How is the screening done?
For the screening, capillary blood drops are placed on a special Filter Card, which will be available from any SYNLAB office. The time of withdrawal is 3rd to 6th day of life.
The newborn screen is most accurate if the infant's blood is taken after the first 36 hours of their life. If it was done before 36 hours of age, a second sample needs to be taken if the infant is 1 to 2 weeks old.

WhatsAppSexually transmitted infections (STIs) are infections or diseases that are passed on during unprotected sex with an infected partner. They are caused by bacteria, parasites, and viruses, which can be transmitted from person to person in blood, semen, or vaginal and other bodily fluids.
Most people with STIs don’t show any symptoms. It's possible to contract STIs from people who seem perfectly healthy and may not even know they have an infection. That’s why it’s crucial to get tested, even if you feel perfectly fine.
If left untreated, STIs can lead to severe health issues, such as an increased risk of getting HIV, certain cancers, mother-to-child transmission, and even infertility.

The most common STIs
Here are the most common STIs that we test for at SYNLAB:
Chlamydia: Chlamydia is a common STI that is caused by bacteria. People who are infected frequently don’t show any symptoms in the early stages. But an untreated infection may damage a woman’s reproductive tract and her ability to get pregnant.
Gonorrhoea: Gonorrhoea is also caused by bacteria and can be transmitted through unprotected sex. If left untreated, it may cause infertility.
Hepatitis B: Hepatitis B is a sexually transmitted disease, but it is spread in other ways, too. You can get infected through contact with an infected person's blood, semen, or vaginal fluids.
HIV: HIV is caused by a virus and attacks the immune system, our body’s natural defense against illness. untreated HIV infection may cause Acquired Immune deficiency Syndrome (AIDS).
Syphilis: syphilis is caused by bacteria and can affect any part of the body, including the brain, spinal cord, and heart. It can be treated with antibiotics.
Human papillomavirus (HPV): HPV is a common infection that can affect different parts of your body
Genital herpes: Genital herpes is an STI caused by the herpes simplex virus and can affect both men and women. The infection is mostly asymptomatic but may cause painful blisters and ulcers.
Trichomoniasis: Trichomoniasis is a common sexually transmitted infection caused by a parasite. In women, trichomoniasis can cause a foul-smelling vaginal discharge, genital itching and painful urination. Men who have trichomoniasis typically have no symptoms.
At SYNLAB we offer screening tests to detect and diagnose if you have an STI and more advanced tests to help you manage the infection |
